NHTSA Safety Recalls:
Important: The following recalls were issued for the 1999 MERCURY COUGAR by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). To find out if a specific 1999 MERCURY COUGAR still has open recalls that require repair, CARFAX recommends contacting an authorized dealership for more information.

Recall date: 03-07-2001
Units potentially affected: 120,000
NHTSA campaign number: 01V031000
Defective part or component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:BATTERY:CABLE
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles equipped with 2.5L V6 engines. The battery cable was misrouted and its attachment to the alternator cable was under-torqued. If misrouted, the cable could contact the power steering line and the insulation could wear, resulting in an electrical short. The short could potentially result in a fire, stalling, or a no-start condition. Dealers will inspect the battery cable to the alternator for damage and, if it is damaged, will replace the cable. Additionally, the routing of the cable will be corrected, as necessary, and a routing clip will be added. Also the torque on the alternator attachment of the cable will be checked and, as required, will be tightened to specification. Owner notification began March 22, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
Recall date: 03-09-2001
Units potentially affected: 33,000
NHTSA campaign number: 01V032000
Defective part or component: LIGHTING:SWITCH:BUTTON:RING:BRAKE LIGHTS
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The brake lamp switch terminals could overheat. This could cause either a loss of brake lamp function or continuously illuminated brake lamps, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will install a new stop lamp extension harness with bronze terminals at the brake lamp switch connector, and also inspect the brake lamp switch for signs of overheating and replace, as required. Owner notification began March 22, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 342,962
NHTSA campaign number: 01V230000
Defective part or component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The rough surface of the heater blower resistor's stainless steel blades can damage the copper surface of the wiring harness connector. The damage could, over time, cause increased resistance in the connector and, due to subsequent terminal relaxation, result in an open circuit condition. The open circuit could lead to electrical arcing that could melt the connector housing material creasing the potential for a fire. Dealers will install a new heater blower resistor and a new wire jumper harness. Owner notification began August 29, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
Recall date: 08-10-1999
Units potentially affected: 159,565
NHTSA campaign number: 99V194000
Defective part or component: FUEL:THROTTLE LINKAGES AND CONTROL
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The accelerator cable may have been manufactured with a burr on or near the end of the cable sleeve interior. This burr could fray the core wire resulting in the accelerator not returning to idle when the accelerator is released. This condition can result in the throttle sticking, binding, or causing high engine RPM. Dealers will install a revised accelerator cable that has a flared conduit sleeve end and molded on end fitting.
Recall date: Not reported
Units potentially affected: 10,011
NHTSA campaign number: 99V226000
Defective part or component: STRUCTURE:DOOR ASSEMBLY:LATCHES AND LOCKS
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The door latch may have been manufactured with a latch pawl that has a coating which will swell in high humidity conditions. The latch pawl may then stick in the open or unlatched position. The door would not latch when closed. If the vehicle is driven in this condition, it could potentially result in the door opening while the vehicle is in motion. Dealers will install a revised side door latch.

New Car Test Drive Review

Category: Review:
Summary:

A phat new cat that handles great.
By Mitch McCullough, Editor-in-Chief, NewCarTestDrive.com

Driving enthusiasts in the market for a sport coupe should take a close look at the Cougar V6. People who want a stylish, practical coupe can't go wrong with the 4-cylinder model. Both are priced aggressively to compete with respective models from Japan.

Overview:

While the previous Cougar was nothing more than an overweight, rebadged Thunderbird, the new one is a sporty coupe designed to appeal to younger professionals.

With that in mind, Mercury's marketing people took a group of dealers to the House of Blues. Mercury dealers are most comfortable selling Grand Marquis, Villagers and Tracers, but the launch of the Cougar will bring a type of buyer into their showrooms they have never seen before. They needed to understand that they shouldn't immediately show someone the door just because they were sporting green hair and wearing tattered clothes.

Outside, a guy wearing a nose ring, asked one of the Mercury marketing executives what kind of car he was driving. Told it was a new Cougar, he eyed it again, took a drag off his cigarette, exhaled, squinted and said, "That car looks phat, man." If you know that's a compliment, then you just may be the type of buyer Mercury has in mind for this new car. If you don't, you may still be interested in this great new coupe.
