The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Saturn L Series was introduced in the 2000 model year and discontinued after a limited number of 2005 models were manufactured.

Dummy movement was reasonably well controlled. During rebound from the airbag, the dummy moved toward the driver door, and its head went partway through the open window. Then the head moved back in and hit the B-pillar and top of the door opening.
Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right tibia indicate that injuries to the lower leg would be likely. Head acceleration from the B-pillar hit was low.

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries plus a fracture of the pelvis would be likely in a crash of this severity. In addition, loading to the shoulder was excessive.
Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
The dummy's head was protected from impact with any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.
2004 Saturn L300.2 4-door

The Saturn L Series was introduced in the 2000 model year. Side curtain airbags for drivers' and front and rear outboard passengers' heads were made optional on 2001 models and standard beginning with 2002 models. The L Series was discontinued after a limited number of 2005 models were manufactured.

The dummy's head brushed past the side curtain airbag and was hit by the intruding barrier. This impact did not produce high head injury measures, but head hits with intruding objects such as other vehicles, trees, and poles should be prevented.

VISUAL SYSTEMS:WINDSHIELD WIPER:MOTOR
|
|
Description:
|
Certain sport utility and passenger vehicles exhibit a condition in which the windshield wiper motor could fail during use because of improper manufacture. If this were to occur in severe weather, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a vehicle crash. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the wiper motor assembly. Owner notification began October 28, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, Prompt #3 or Hummer at 1-866-486-6376.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:MODULE
|
|
Description:
|
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with 2.2l l4 (l61) engines, a failure of the ignition control module may cause deterioration in idle quality, reduction in overall engine power, and the vehicle may be hard to start. Continued operation of the vehicle after such an ignition module failure will result in the ""service engine soon"" light flashing, and may lead to secondary failures of the catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, and exhaust resonator. Failure of the resonator will cause increased exhaust noise. Prolonged operation of the vehicle following a resonator failure may lead to a fire. Dealers will (1) replace the ignition control module, (2) replace the ignition control module and spark plugs, or (3) replace the ignition control module, spark plugs, and update the powertrain control module calibration. Owner notification began on August 4, 2003. Owners should contact Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, prompt 3.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Summary:
|
Ring in the New.
By John Matras, NewCarTestDrive.com
Saturn believes in treating its customers well and that may be the best reason to buy an L-Series sedan or wagon. The L-Series cars deliver value to the mid-size, mid-price level and it's wrapped in a slicker and more handsome wrapper for 2003. The Saturn L-Series cars offer responsive handling and decent performance, though they are not as refined as some of the other mid-size cars. Side-curtain airbags and other safety features enhance the value of the Saturn L-Series. |
|
Overview:
|
When the Saturn L-Series sedans were introduced, they were styled to look like the smaller S-Series Saturns, only bigger. It's not uncommon for automakers to give their products a family resemblance, but the styling of the S-Series was tired, soon to be replaced by the Ion. Combined with a more lackluster impact on the market than Saturn brass would have preferred, the L-Series went to the beauty parlor for a major makeover for 2003. The result is a mid-size Saturn in a new, more attractive wrapper. What hasn't changed is Saturn's simplicity, economy, performance, and dent-resistant composite-plastic side panels. The Saturn L-Series continues to be stuffed with value. Head-curtain airbags, automatic headlamps and ABS with traction control are standard on all models. Options include OnStar and a DVD entertainment center that's a segment exclusive. Floor mats and anti-lock brakes are optional, however. Saturn's legendary customer service also remains, a key attraction for buyers who want a pleasant buying experience and a friendly service.
