The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) provides 3
different ratings -
full-width frontal crash test
,
side impact crash test
, and
rollover resistance
. The frontal crash test indicates how
well the safety features and restraints
will protect an occupant in a head-on
collision. The side-impact test conveys
the chance of a severe chest injury,
while the rollover resistance rating
estimates the risk of rolling over in a
single vehicle crash.

The Hyundai Sonata was redesigned for the 2006 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the Sonata in two 40 mph frontal offset crash tests into deformable barriers.

During the first test, the driver seat back failed to maintain its adjustment in its locked precrash position, resulting in forward rotation of the seat back into the inflated airbag. The seat back then moved rearward and after the crash was found in a semi-reclined position. Postcrash inspection showed the lap portion of the driver lap/shoulder belt was partially caught beneath the seat back adjustment lever and had likely activated the lever during the crash.

Starting on August 1, 2005, Hyundai put into production a new seat back adjustment lever designed to minimize interaction with the seat belt and ensure the belt cannot slide between the lever and the plastic trim on the side of the seat. Hyundai has recalled all 2006 Sonatas manufactured before August 1 to replace the levers at its cost.

A second test was conducted to assess the effect of the fix. Hyundai sent the Institute a replacement seat back adjustment lever that was retrofitted in a Sonata produced before August 1, 2005. In the second test, the seat back remained in place.

The evaluation of the Sonata is based on the second test, except for the structural rating, which is based both tests.

Dummy movement was well controlled in the second test. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail.
In the second test, measures taken from the head, chest, and legs indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the neck when the head hit the roof rail indicate that neck injuries would be possible. Head acceleration from the roof rail hit was low.

Measures taken from the dummy indicate that a fracture of the pelvis would be likely in a crash of this severity. Rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries would also be possible.
Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
The dummy's head was protected from being hit by any hard structures, including the intruding barrier, by a side curtain airbag that deployed from the roof.

SUSPENSION:AUTOMATIC STABILITY CONTROL (ASC)
|
|
Description:
|
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with 3.3 liter engines and electronic stability control (ESC), the ESC may have been programmed to be oversensitive to the onset of oversteering while driving on banked curves, causing inadvertent application of the front outside brake when ESC activation may not be needed. This may cause the vehicle to slow and may affect the path that the vehicle is traveling. Brake application caused by inadvertent ESC activation may result in a crash. Dealers will reprogram the ESC hydraulic electronic control unit. The recall is expected to begin during July 2005. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

Description:
|
On certain passenger vehicles, the front seat belt may interfere with the manual seat back recliner knob and could cause the front manual seat back recliner to inadvertently release. The inadvertent release of a front seat back recliner may result in injury to vehicle occupants. Dealers will replace the manual seat back recliner knob(s). The recall is expected to begin during October 2005. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
|
|
Description:
|
On certain passenger vehicles, the inner bezels of the headlamps were not properly assembled which may cause the turn signal lenses to be improperly positioned. An improperly positioned turn signal lens may reduce the intensity of the turn signal illumination, reducing its visibility to oncoming traffic, which may result in a crash. Dealers will replace the left and right headlamp assemblies free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during July 2006. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

New Car Test Drive Review
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Summary:
|
All-new mid-size sedan is a compelling buy.
By Tom Lankard, NewCarTestDrive.com
The all-new 2006 Hyundai Sonata is a giant step up for Hyundai, moving the brand closer to Honda, Toyota and Nissan, and contesting for buyers considering Ford and Chevrolet. There's nothing unique or especially exciting about driving the new Sonata, save for the fact it's a Hyundai. By that yardstick, and what that portends for shoppers in the class, it's a blast.New Car Test Drive correspondent Tom Lankard filed this report from San Francisco. |
|
Overview:
|
The mid-size, mid-price car market is approaching saturation. Depending on how they're counted, more than seven nameplates compete for shoppers looking for a car that's thrifty, yet performs; that's comfortable, but not expensive; that's fresh and new, but promises to be reliable. Korea's car makers have never been a part of this class. They've danced around the edges, with the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata. But neither car has broken through and established a solid foothold in the mainstream U.S. market. Enter the all-new 2006 Hyundai Sonata. While the previous-generation Sonata made a dramatic jump to the top spot in the J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Initial Quality Study ranking of entry midsize cars, the 2006 Sonata has been completely redesigned. It's bigger, better equipped, more technologically advanced and sharper looking than the 2005 model it replaces. The class in which the new Sonata competes, however, is blurred. Exterior-wise, it goes against mid-size sedans, primarily the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima and secondarily against the Chevrolet Malibu, the Kia Optima and the upcoming Ford Fusion. Inside, though, the '06 Sonata moves up a class, to large car, which gives it a potential edge in creature comfort. With minor and essentially immaterial exceptions, it lives up to that potential. It's roomier in almost every dimension than its midsize competitors, which is no surprise. Fit and finish is on a par with most others in the class, which also is no surprise. In terms of performance, it equals or bests comparably featured cars, which is a surprise. It's cleaner, too, than earlier Sonatas. Just as important, if not more so, the new Sonata is aggressively priced, positioned smack in the middle of the range of prices of the mid-size sedans. All this combined makes the 2006 Hyundai Sonata good enough to put the mid-priced, midsize market on notice. There's a new player.
